Hazel Smith's new book 'The Writing Experiment: strategies for innovative creative writing' (2005)
is available in Australia in bookshops now. It will reach bookshops in the UK mid-year, and bookshops in the US in about October, but can be ordered at any time from the Allen and Unwin website. The book is designed for tertiary level students studying creative writing, and also for the general reader. It takes an experimental approach, stresses step-by-step strategies, and uses literary and cultural theory to illuminate the process of writing. It explores many different types of writing, including fiction, poetry, mixed genre writing, writing for performance and writing for new media. Each chapter is illustrated with extensive student and published examples. The book also has an an accompanying website with additional information and examples of performance and multimedia works. The Australian Book Review (May 2005) has a glowing review, noting Hazel as a 'major poet', and describing the book as an innovative contribution, the first of its kind. NB this book is not currently available from us, but from the publisher and distributors.
Roger Dean's "Sounds from the Corner", a book on Australian jazz and its embodiment on CD, has been published in August 2005 by the Australian Music Centre, from whom it may be purchased.
Reviewing the book in the academic journal Musicology Australia (29, 166-172, 2007) Craig Scott wrote: 'It is a testimony to the thoroughness of Dean's research that such a wide range of ensembles and leaders is represented in his selection of recorded material. ... it is a long overdue catalogue of an informed and judiciously assembled cross-section of the most important practitioners of the most important musical art from in Australia. ... The remaining sections of the book are no less interesting and enligthening. Dean's essay entitled ;Australia and Contemporary Jazz and Improvisation: some economic, cultural, political and formalist aspects' follows the [analysis of recorded materials]' ... it 'offers insights into some of the contributions and impacts made upon society by jazz and improvisation in Australia.'
